Abstract
A brief historical discussion on development of weight and cost for aircraft is used to introduce the subject. The current methods being used to assess weapon system costs are presented. Those which the contractor control are highlighted. It is concluded that fuel costs during operations is the cost driver for contractor designs. The results of the relaxed manufacturing tolerance program on weight and cost are presented. Manufacturing cost as a measure of dollar/lb is discussed. Several case studies in weight control are presented with some relationship to the cost aspects.
