Abstract
The Naval Ship Engineering Center has recently completed development of, and instituted use of a new computer based system to aid in the production and monitoring of ship design weight estimates. This paper describes a development process which could be used to produce a similar system. Much of what is presented was, in fact, employed in developing the documentation of the Ship Design Weight Estimate (SDWE) System for which the authors were responsible.
The ideas presented cover the process of problem evaluation, system development, documentation, implementation and maintenance. Emphasis is placed on the development of computer based systems.
Appendix A contains a description of the SDWE system in the form of the system and program documentation which is SDWE System Manual.
