Abstract
Civil transport aircraft are in service for a period up to 15 or 20 years and the structure is under continuous monitoring in order to maintain safety standards. The paper outlines routine inspection requirements together with the more specific structural sampling programs. Non destructive testing and in-flight recording aids are discussed.
This paper outlines some of the maintenance problems caused by unexpected events, i.e. fatigue cracks, or corrosion, and their effects on planned maintenance. Several examples of actual defects are quoted and few comments are made on structural improvements made by the airline. The paper concludes with a comment on the expected reliability of supersonic aircraft.
