813. On the Use of Aircraft Density in Preliminary Design. 1969.
Abstract
A systematic investigation of aircraft weight and volume characteristics is made to determine the practicability of using empirical densities in the original sizing of preliminary designs. Techniques are derived for approximating maximum cross section areas, wetted areas, and other aerodynamic parameters prior to ‘sizing’ the aircraft through conventional design techniques. A separate dissertation is included to show that structural percentage of gross weight varies predictably with density.
