H Yapp: 773. Flotation Attitude Analysis by Potential Energy Technique. 1969.

Abstract

This paper presents a discussion of the mechanics of a floating body. Discussion centers on the problems of determining attitude and stability on the basis of the potential energy balance of the system. The discussion includes Archimedes principle, torques on the body, and conditions for equilibrium. An example analysis for a body of revolution is described which is also suitable with modification for other shapes. Some discussion of the sinking body problem is included. Metacentric height methods are avoided. This method is of value since not only is the static case analysis performed but the results are directly useable for determining dynamic characteristics of floating body.
