Abstract

This paper will discuss the status of the design and development of the Boeing Model 747. Two years ago, SAWE Paper No. 620 presented the how and why of the 747 and outlined the objectives governing its design. A brief review of these considerations is appropriate before proceeding with a current status report.
The ‘why’ of the 747, the first of which is now flying, can be summed up like this. A radically larger jetliner was needed to help relieve congestion both on runways and in the air over airports. The 747 fills this requirement for high capacity while at the same time offering other advantages. Outstanding among these are its vastly improved operating economics, highly expedited passenger and cargo handling systems, and much more comfortable passenger environment.
The ‘how’ of the 747 stems from Boeing’s extensive experience combined with new advances in the technology of engines, high lift devices, airfoils, electronics, and other system components?
The Design Objectives are as follows:
– Provide a capacity capable of matching the market demand during the 1970’s
– Design an airplane close to optimum both as a passenger and as a cargo transport
– Design an airplane capable of operating from existing airports with minimal takeoff and landing noise
– Reduce operating costs by 25 to 30 percent
