Paper

R R Thompson: 720. Effectiveness of the Engineering Society in Meeting Established Goals. 1968.

Abstract

Professional or engineering society members number more than one half million. The major problem faced by Engineering Societies today is not the number of members but th2 quality of the work they are doing their members. The societies have been criticized for skirting part of their responsibility to the engineering, the engineering profession, the companies, and the Society itself. Figure (1) shows a comparison of various Engineering Societies.
The subject of my presentation is ‘Effectiveness of the Engineering Society in Meeting Established Goals’s. This paper is written to give the reader an awareness that such problems exist and suggest methods of self-help for the Society and for the society member. The presentation is divided into two parts (1) to review of a study made of goals for the Society of Aeronautical Weight Engineers by a special committee in 1964; (2) to survey our society and other societies and to evaluate current goals and whether they are being met.
