Abstract

The author haspresented a method whereby using ultimate tensile strength and yield compression strength for specified aluminum alloys the weight engineer may estimate the weight ratio of welded aluminum alloy to welded steel for simple or complex structures.
While there are in existing literature available to the marine industry some few rules of thumb which may be accurate if applied to large complex structures, their application to small simple structures is hazardous in as the variation of the weight ratio is large for comparison of one type simple structure to anothera nd for comparison of various aluminum alloys to various steel alloys.
The author has presented weight ratios for specified high magnesium aluminum alloys (5000 series)and for aluminum alloy 6061 as compared to Ship’s Steel, high tensile steel and HY-80 steel.
The ratio is generated by a design of the structure using one (1) of three (3) steel alloys dividing the structure into simple components on a percentile basis, and the application of the appropriate weight ratio from the tables presented. The procedure is not simple, but will generally result in a more accurate basis for comparison than will a general percentage rule, the accuracy being dependant upon the amount of detail incorporated in the analysis.
