Paper

G E Henning: 645. The Metric System – Where Are We?. 1967.

Abstract

With 90 percent of the world’s population officially adopting and using a metric system of measurements, the question must be considered–’Can the United tates afford to continue with the use of English (U. S. Customary) units?’
This paper discusses the activity and inactivity associated with the change-over to the International System (SI) of measurement. Congressional action, Government action, Industry action and Technical Society action is presented.
The author, committee chairman for the SAWE Metric Study, reports on that committee study to date. Preliminary data indicates that by 1981, cumulative costs to the aerospace industry may approach $2 Billion due to extraneous calculations involved with retaining the English units in a metric world.
