Abstract
When a conventional wing becomes unconventional because of a unique requirement, a special weight analysis is usually necessary. An example of this would be the provisions for folding the wing tips on the XB-70 in flight. A more recent example was the variable sweep wing on SST design studies at the Los Angeles Division. The weight calculation performed on the SST pivot was a lengthy process. Study effort on advanced weapon systems has made it necessary to accelerate this analysis. This paper describes the process used in determining the weight of a pivot for a variable sweep wing.
