E Propper: 266. Basic Accuracy Limitations in Weight and Center of Gravity Determination. 1960.

Abstract

This paper was presented at the Nineteenth National Conference of the Society of Aeronautical Weight Engineers at Los Angeles, California, May 16 – 19, 1960. This paper discusses the major problems dealing with operational use of electronic weighing systems for pure weight and center determination and to offer suggestions leading to the overall improvement of system accuracy. Non-linearity effects are discussed along with the design of standard load cells to account for those effects. Temperature effects are discussed and the application of temperature compensating resistances. Alignment of load and calibration techniques (and force standards) are also discussed as are the effects of gravity variations by geographic location, potential errors due to the buoyancy from air, and potential center of gravity errors due to the type of load cell points and location of cells.
