Abstract

The purpose of this study is to show the extend to which the increases in the maximum take-off weight, maximum landing weight, and maximum zero fuel weight contributed towards maintaining payload capacity and/or range both before and after delivery.
The study concludes that the empty weight of an aircraft grows more rapidly than the landing and zero fuel weight limits both before and after delivery. So an aircraft with an Empty Weight of 70 000 lb at contract would use from 250 – 400 lb of the manufacturer’s contingency allowance in maintaining the payload over a period of 3 years from contract to delivery. Assuming that the payload and operating guarantees were just met at first delivery, the payload loss in service at the end of 5 years would be 3 to 5 passengers.
