Abstract

With missiles and airplanes being subjected to more and more complex environments, the need for light weight materials that will retain their strength over broad temperature ranges becomes more critical. To meet these requirements, new materials are being developed that hold great promise for the aircraft industry. A metal, beryllium, although not new in some industries, is undergoing development for aircraft applications and appears to be a solution to some of the high temperature problems associated with advanced missiles and airplanes. In this paper, beryllium is considered as a structural material suitable for a missile or airplane operating in the 700degreeF flight environment.
