V D Zahner: 156. The Influence of Structural Materials on the Weight, Capability and Cost of a Weapon System. 1957.

Abstract

The influence of materials on aircraft structural weight is discussed in terms of mechanical properties, type of structure, and loading. The effect of the structural weight on aircraft performance is then presented in the form of the target coverage capability of strategic bombing systems using various amounts of refueling.
A method of comparison between systems involving different structural materials is shown in terms of total system cost for a given job. This total cost of equal-capability systems allows the determination of the break-even value, in dollars per pound, of the structural material under investigation, thus providing an assessable comparison in a simple, straightforward form.
A general description of bomber-tanker capabilities is given in an Appendix.
