Abstract

The published title of the paper ‘Designing weight out of an Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine’ hints in a somewhat direct manner, at the actual procedure used by our particular organization to keep an eye on the weight of a product, and to ensure that adequate steps are taken to keep that weight under control.
The first part of the paper enters into a brief discourse on Engineering Department organizational philosophy, since the method of fitting the weight control operation in with the overall program is probably the most important factor in making such a program successful.
The second part of the paper deals with examples of some of the more significant weight-saving techniques which we have employed.
