Abstract

The importance of projecting, tracking, reporting, and certifying the weight of Ford Motor Company vehicles is directly associated with emissions compliance, fuel economy, cost and component design (brakes, tires, etc.). Part weight information is required for internal vehicle development and for supporting external government reporting requirements. The Part Online Weight Engineering and Reporting System (POWER) is a new part weight reporting system under development at Ford Motor Company. POWER will be used by Ford engineering activities around the world that need to report and track the weights of parts for all vehicle types. This system functionally replaces a weight reporting system currently in place for the North American Automotive Operations as well as potentially replacing several other component and part weight systems. Relative to vehicle program timing, POWER is intended to track part weights at all points in the product development cycle where such information exists and can be captured.
