Abstract

Use of composite materials in a production environment requires methods of weight control that are unique to composite structures. Stringent controls and continued monitoring of the materials, design practices1 tooling, fabrication, and repair are required. Without these controls, the weight savings associated with the use of composites can very quickly be eroded.

This paper addresses the specific weight control procedures employed at Sikorsky during each phase of the development process. It gives examples of weight savings degradation that occur without these controls and the orders of magnitude of weight that can be saved in specific component areas.
