Abstract

The forty year old idea of using movable ballast as a means of controlling balance may be the answer to present and future high Mach Number fighter aircraft balance problems. If it can be established that when ballast is required, the weight cost of moving the ballast to the extremities of the aircraft in flight can be offset by design re-evaluation, this feature should be given serious consideration. It is with this thought in mind that we now proceed with an evaluation of balance control with movable ballast.
